JOANN MALLETT

Joann Mallett
Mental health nurse

ABSTRACT
In my presentation I will discuss the practice of nursing in relation to supporting psychedelic sessions and suggest there are skills and approaches embedded in nursing practice that are valuable in, and should inform, how we use psychedelics.I will draw on my own experience as a nurse, as a psychedelic ceremonial facilitator, and my role within Imperial College. I will explore the core principles of nursing as articulated by contemporary nurse practitioners as well as drawing on the classic work by Florence Nightingale, written in 1859, 'Notes on Nursing, What it is and what it is not'. In my presentation I will provide a comprehensive description of the core competencies of nursing and how they mesh with the work of psychedelic sitting.

BIOGRAPHY
I have been a mental health nurse for nearly thirty years, working across many different settings and specialities. I currently find myself most interested in the potential use of psychedelics to promote healing, growth & learning. I am an experienced psychedelic journeyer and facilitator, and current guide on the PsiloPain trial at Imperial College, London, which explores the use of Psilocybin to affect the personal impact of pain in people living with Fibromyalgia (Chronic pain). I am currently part of a working group who are establishing links with Psychedelic Nurses within the USA, with the intention to raise the profile of nursing and allied professionals within the psychedelic space and provide free or low cost trainings & experiences.
