Breaking Convention is many things, more than just an academic conference.  Not satisfied with dissolving ourselves in the latest academic developments and artistic works, we like to round off each day with evening entertainments to celebrate psychedelics as an integrative, versatile and diverse paradigm.  We have featured names such as Cold Cut, Mixmaster Morris, Youth, DJ Food, Gnod Soccer96, Nik Turner's Space Ritual, Andy Votel and The Oscillation and many more to help us with this in the past.

ARTIST DETAILS

Sculpture
Sculpture - Live AV Set
Sculpture is electronic music producer, Dan Hayhurst, and visual artist, Reuben Sutherland, on a freewheeling excursion through temporary forms of digital composition, analogue electronics, comic strips, sci-fi, pop, psychedelia and multisensory perception.

Discovering transitory possibilities in live A/V performance is central. Utilizing an ever expanding library of zoetropic prints, Sutherland’s visual turntablism combines pre-cinema imaging with cutting-edge digital techniques in hallucinatory loops and jumps. There’s a clear connection with Hayhurst’s unstable sonics, free associations that gleefully defy convention in pursuit of a unique internal logic.

A sequence of animated picture discs have appeared on Dekorder, Ana Ott and Tapebox. Sculpture’s Membrane Pop LP and a live A/V document, Video Plot, were released by Oneohtrix Point Never’s Software label. Slime Code instantiated as 7 unique cassettes plus digital edition on patten’s Kaleidoscope imprint, later reissued on vinyl by Digitalis. The duo’s recent work includes the tape/graphic novel, Nearest Neighbour, and a series of digital audio and video works on their new Plastic Infinite label.
Horton Jupiter
Horton Jupiter - DJ Set
Horton Jupiter is British DJ / Collector of records of broad range, predominantly disco / dance music in its all forms, with psychedelic spectacles.  He has been making mixtapes since age 9, and did his first tape edit (of The Human League) 2 yrs later, 30 years before he'd even HEARD of DJ Harvey or Tom Moulton!

After starting out as a balearic / anything goes party DJ in '89, he subsequently spent 7 years playing hypnotic techno & psychedelic breaks in the east London underground party scene, 4 years playing Krautrock and all it's relatives as one of the original Club Kosmische residents, 11 years as head idiot of wild Erisian pop outfit They Came From The Stars I Saw Them, 4 years running the UK's first ever home restaurant, and 5 years as resident at south London's legendary underground dance Puwaba.

Horton currently runs his own occasional party PHONOMANCY, recently put out an e.p. of kosmische edits on BAHNSTEIG XXIII, is working towards starting his own record label, and recently undertook a ritual pilgrimage with 68 others in order to immanantise the eschaton, re-set Planet World, and usher in The Age Of Grummet.
Alex Downey
Breaking Convention Resident DJ: Alex Downey
There’s only a handful of DJ’s I’ve ever heard who are naturally gifted and Alex Downey is one of them,” says techno don Ben Sims at whose Split/Balance nights Downey has regularly played.

Based in Brighton, Alex fell in love with techno from seeing the likes of Derrick May and Dave Clarke at the Zap Club in the early nineties, and his regular pilgrimages to London’s Lost parties were an inspiration, where Jeff Mills became a massive influence on his musical perspective.

Alex Downey has been an ardent supporter of quality underground music and a prominent purveyor of all things electronic as a DJ, vinyl pusher, and radio presenter for well over two decades.  Alex was a key figure behind the counter at Brighton's legendary Covert Records and has amassed an immense record collection spanning the house, techno and electro spectrum, while his unrestricted sets behind the decks have earned him much respect and a great reputation amongst the global electronic community.

He’s the high priest at his new business venture; ‘The Temple of Vinyl’, a monumental warehouse stocked floor to ceiling with the black gold, whilst his broad taste and consummate selection skills can be heard on his ‘Voyage De Lux’ radio shows, on Brighton’s 1BTN FM every other Wednesday night.

More recently, Alex has become a Third Ear resident DJ, as the seminal label seeks to bring together a select group of idiosyncratic DJs that showcase the label’s ethos, and is now represented by the ‘Guaranteed Connection Artists’ agency.  Alex Downey is the resident Breaking Convention DJ.  Check out his mix for Breaking Convention 2017.
Paddy Steer
Paddy Steer - Live
Paddy Steer is a Zelig-like character along the timeline of Manchester’s musical activity.  It’s a testament to his musicality that he has played with such a wide range of music and artists over the years, be it as a bass player, drummer, Hawaiian guitarist etc. or all these roles at the same time.

His own Homelife project released six albums in recent years, Homelife's sound was intricate but with a warm sense of wonder, a balance of songs and instrumentals.  Many musicians contributed to the Homelife project, brewed slowly by Paddy in his attic before being taken out as a small orchestra for some very unique concerts.

Never one to blow his own trumpet, Paddy quietly gets on with developing his craft.  There is something of the fairy-tale cobbler working late into the night in order to make the finest shoes in the kingdom, or maybe the musical elves strike up while he's in bed.

Recorded, it’s a sometime cartoon-like music dense with events, new textures and the colours of children’s paintings, sounds like a Swiss cuckoo clock made of egg boxes and horsehair, glued together by an African Moog player in a Vietnamese iron monger's shop.

In rejection of the notion of 'immaculate reproduction', live performances err more daringly and admirably on the frontier of chaotic abstraction, expression and focussed blunder, dice rolling down the hill in case of duende, as from behind his stacked array of instruments, the anarchically intrepid punk gargles through a vocoder with his xylophone, all a-clatter under disco lights and doilies.

Kermit & The Superweird System
Kermit & The Superweird System - DJ Set
Kermit & The Super Weird System is the latest offering from the ever-evolving Moss Side artist. Channelling the likes of Big Youth, Dillinger and U-Roy, Kermit Leveridge’s new project sees him assume the role of a JA deejay, toasting over the booty-shaking, dubwise good times spun by Super Weird selector, Josh Ray.

From an original British b-boy to a Ruthless Rap Assassin, Kermit has constantly shape-shifted his way to the front of the vanguard. Having been the first dancer photographed spinning on his head in the UK during his Broken Glass days, his rhymes were later hailed by Roots Manuva as the ‘the roots of grime’ and as a founding half of Black Grape, alongside Shaun Ryder, Kermit climbed to the top of the UK charts, securing his name in the annals of music history.

After touring the world to critical acclaim and crossing the near-fatal abyss of heroin addiction, Kermit returned as a poet with lyrical wit that’s as distinct and impressive as ever. Reigniting a long-standing creative partnership with DJ Greg Wilson in 2014, his return to music inspired the formation of the multi-media Super Weird Substance label, and an extended family of singers, musicians and DJs has grown out of it since.

With an output including 2 life-affirming mixtapes and 9 balearicpsychedelicdubdisco vinyl EPs, the label has established a name for itself in the counterculture, furthered by a string of live events including 7 memorable sixties-styled Super Weird Happenings. Providing a pop-up party wherever they go, the label has established a reputation for versatility; as comfortable hosting intimate fire-side sessions as they are rocking a full house on main stages.

This latest manifestation sees Kermit join forces with Josh Ray, who’s established a solid reputation for reggae locally in Liverpool, at festivals like Positive Vibration and Africa Oyé, whilst DJing further afield in places like Amsterdam and Addis Ababa. Debuted to an incredibly warm and increasingly wild response at Sheffield’s Catch 23, followed by a transcendent session at Damanhur, Kermit & The Super Weird System are primed to rock festival audiences across the UK with their new slant on a sound system.

Clandestina
Clandestina - DJ Set
Clandestina, born in Florence, Tuscany, currently living in South Portugal, has been collecting music since early age.  She starts djing in the Chill Out stages of Psytrance Festivals, to then move to more upbeat sounds, exploring all those sonorities that allow people of different ages and "scenes" to dance in unison to a timeless, yet extremely contemporary, beat.  Tunes with a compelling groove, instruments and lyrics from all over the world, a crescendo of tempo with an irresistible bass, all conspires to create the kind of vibe that is not easy to cathegorize and impossible to let go...
Aluna Gaia
Aluna Gaia
In the beginning, there was a blackness. Only the sea. In the beginning there was no sun, no moon, no people. In the beginning there were no animals, no plants. Only the sea. The sea was the Mother. The Mother was not people, she was not anything. Nothing at all. She was when she was, darkly. She was memory and potential. She was ALUNA.

Aluna is the experimental project of Gaia - she has been djing and producing in the duo Jean & LaPlastique for a decade. Aluna Gaia is a project with no boundaries - it moves from tribal notes - to technological experience of sound. BPM are theories of explorations- no rules are applied except emotions.

DJ Food
DJ Food - DJ Set
DJ Food is an electronic music project currently headed by Kevin Foakes (aka "Strictly Kev").  Originally conceived by the members of Coldcut on the Ninja Tune independent record label, the project started in 1990 on the premise of providing metaphorical "food for DJs". DJ Food released the Jazz Brakes series, with Jazz Brakes Volume 3 being the most successful.  The records consisted of collections of breaks, loops and samples, that could be used for mixing, remixing and producing.

The later DJ Food albums have developed with shades of Latin, dub, breakbeat, ambient, and drum and bass.

The 1995 album A Recipe for Disaster was a conscious move away from the Jazz Brakes volumes to form more of an identity as an artist, and a remix album of tracks from all 6 LPs, entitled Refried Food was released the following year.  The more recent release, Kaleidoscope, features guest artists including Bundy K. Brown (formerly of Tortoise, Directions in Music, Pullman) and voiceover artist and jazz poet, Ken Nordine.
Darren Sangita
NDiPA (Darren Sangita + Matt Black) - DJ Set
Darren Sangita is a composer & producer and performer.  Since 1994 he has sought to unite music and culture by working with international, indigenous musicians and technological wizards of the aural arts. He has worked with musicians, poets and producers from Iran, Morocco, India, Australia, Venezuela, Turkey, Syria and Oman and his production credits include:-
Ashirvad

Matt Black is a British DJ and one half of music duo Coldcut (along with Jonathan More), which founded the Ninja Tune record label.  Black is one of the inventors of the VJamm software used in the Coldcut live shows and also co-developed a "granular video synthesizer" titled Granul8.  He is also a founding member of the (now defunct) VJ group Hex, and of the VJ group The VJamm Allstars with whom he continues to perform shows and has also worked alongside Crass Agenda as part of the Savage Utopia project.
TAU
TAU - Live
TAU's newest offering TAU and The Drones of Praise, following TAU TAU TAU (2016) leaps to life from its very first track, offering an empowering manifesto that lays their weapons on the table for all to see: TAU filter out the cacophony and confusion of the current way of living which weaves the listener directly to the heart of things. It offers studious ruminations of the invisible crossed with the wall-of-sound psychedelic drone arrangements that are at the very core of the project.

After celebrating their (first) release in venues and festivals all over Europe, including coveted performances at Le Guess Who Festival, Liverpool Psych Fest and Levitation Angers as well as plays and recognition on BBC 6 with fans in Cerys Matthews and Tom Ravenscroft, TAU have matured their sound.

TAU and The Drones Of Praise is a yawp into the darkness, formulating new medicine with old roots. It will be released on February 4th 2019 on their own label DRONES OF PRAISE RECORDS.
